The Central Ground Water Board was formed on the orders of the Honble Supreme Court in Civil Writ Petition No 4677 of 1985, MC Mehta Vs Union of India, vide notification number S.O. 38 (E), dated the 14th January, 1997, to exercise powers under sub section (3) of section 3 of the Environment (Protection) Act, to regulate and monitor ground water management and development, and to exercise certain powers and perform certain functions in accordance with the Act.

(1) For acquiring NOC for setting up boring water, the applicant has to submit the application online with the appropriate documents. Before submitting the application, the applicant must make Log-ID on the official site of the authority.
(2) After the application is submitted, the authorities inspect the application and documentation submitted with the application.
(3) Following the inspection of the documents, the NOC is granted if there are no mistakes found in the application. After NOC is granted, the applicant is required to install an IoT-based groundwater Monitoring System within 90 days.
